Mikhail Vrubel painted the panel “Princess Daydream” in early 1896; Konstantin Korovin and Vasily Polenov helped him to create the work. Now this large-scale work is posted in the Tretyakov Gallery. Its dimensions are impressive - the width of the painting reaches fourteen meters, and the height is seven and a half meters. Canvas painted with art pastels and coal.

Unfortunately, during the debut, the canvas did not have much recognition, during the life of the artist the critic did not find originality and spiritual strength in it. Art connoisseurs considered Vrubel’s hand canvas to be overly decorative.

The work struck with its non-triviality and courage, which was by no means welcomed. All this happened, despite the great popularity of the work among the public.

The artist depicts on canvas a scene from the work of Edmond Rostan, written in the form of a poetic drama. The story tells the audience about the platonic love between the troubadour Geoffrey Rüdel and Princess Melisandra.

The young man heard many stories about the princess's incomparable beauty and generosity, which made him fall in love. He sets off on a journey across the seas to meet his beloved for the first time and reveal his feelings to her. But along the way, a young man falls ill with an incurable ailment. He nevertheless reaches her palace and at the time of their first meeting he dies. Then the princess decides to leave as a nun.

The panel is written in a very unusual way. Among the shades you can find an abundance of golden, gray-pearl and olive color. All these obscure midtones give the impression of a fabulous event. The picture is striking in its scale and mysticism. In the center we see the figures of a young man floating on a ship in red, who holds out his hands to his beautiful princess, but these two pure souls are destined to connect only for a short moment.
