The work of the legendary 17th-century Spanish artist Diego Velazquez, which was written in 1655, occupies a key place in his work and belongs to the portrait genre, which during Velazquez was especially popular in the European art world. Velazquez himself, being a court painter of the king of Spain, quite often depicted in his paintings precisely members of the monarchic family, emphasizing the greatness of the ruling Spanish dynasty.
The picture of the Infanta Margarita, who was the daughter of the King of Spain Philip IV and who later became the Empress of the Holy Roman Empire, refers to the mature period of the master's work. It was during this time that Velazquez created a whole gallery of portraits of the Infanta.
In this picture, the future ruler has a cold-restrained appearance, which should have been present among representatives of the nobility of her level, while her look is also emphasized, despite the fact that she is only four years old, as well as the posture of the infant, which also vividly testifies that in front of us is a representative of the royal family.
Despite the static nature of the figure of the infante, expertly depicted by Velazquez, the manner of conveying the very image of a little girl, who is to become a great ruler in the future, is striking. The soft features and swelling of the lips, together with the golden hair of the girl, give her the image of tenderness and warmth, despite the severity of her very appearance. The artist himself did not yet know that the Infante was not destined for such a good fate, because she became the empress of the Holy Roman Empire at only 14 years old, and was able to live only 21 years old, but managed to give birth to six heirs to the throne.
At this time, the painting is exhibited at the Louvre Museum - one of the most famous museums in Europe.
