Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin is deservedly called the Sun of Russian poetry. And that’s how we see him in the portrait of Orest Kiprensky. This artist had the glory of one of the best portrait painters, and that is why Anton Delvig ordered him to portray his friend - the great poet A.S. Pushkin.

Contemporaries found that the portrait was quite realistic. The poet is depicted in a frock coat and a cloak over one shoulder. That is how young people dressed in fashion then. But the lighting in the picture was chosen so that it is not the clothes that stand out most clearly, but the head of Pushkin. His face seems to glow, it is marked with a seal of inspiration. It seems that the poet is considering a new poem.

At the same time, anxiety is felt in the face of the poet, this is noticeable on the tightly pressed lips. The poet’s gaze is rather sad, you cannot read serenity in it. But in the whole pose there is humility and calm. This can be seen in the graceful arms crossed on the chest.

It is impossible not to notice a muse figure in the corner of the portrait. At the bronze figurine in the hands of the lyre. This is exactly the muse that Pushkin mentioned more than once in poetry. Kiprensky wanted to show by this that the poet and his inspiration are never parted.

Since the portrait was painted during the life of a genius, there was also information about how the poet himself appreciated it. Pushkin found that the artist embellished his appearance. However, the talent of a true portrait painter is not to convey all facial features with photographic accuracy, but to portray the spiritual world of a person. Therefore, after many centuries and years, we see how inspired Pushkin is, how his face shines with inspiration. Kiprensky conveyed to posterity exactly what we should know about the great Russian poet. After all, we can only judge how Pushkin looked like by his portraits. The rest is in verses and prose of genius.
